Part of speech identifies what a word is; cf. function.

The nine parts of speech are:

Nouns

Will perform a noun function

Pronouns

Exactly like a noun but always have an antecedent

Adjectives

Modify nouns

which one, what kind, how many

Articles

a, an, the

A subset of adjectives

Verbs

Verbs always have a subject

Verbals never have a subject

Adverbs

Modify verbs

how, when, where, why

Conjunctions

Conjunctions always join things

Coordinating join = parts

Subordinating join ≠ parts

Prepositions

Every preposition MUST have an object. Together, they make up a prepositional phrase.

Interjections

a word that has no relation to any other part of the sentence
